Figures released by the Scottish Prison Service under FOISA have shown that prisoners at the local prison have had numerous items taken from them over the past year.
From August 2009 to August 2010 862 seperate items have been taken from prisoners at HMP Edinburgh. Items were removed because they had been used inappropriately, were stolen, dangerous or banned.
Mobile phones were the item most often confiscated with 362 being taken from inmates. During the same period 789 were taken from prisoners across Scotland by prison warders. Since December 2008 it has been illegal for prisoners to have mobiles or sim cards in prison.
Worryingly 68 weapons were confiscated which was the highest amount confiscated in Scottish prisons.
